Continuing Education Units include all instructional and organizational learning experiences in organized formats that impart non-credit education to post-secondary level learners. Students may not receive CEU and academic credit for the same learning activity. Units are assigned based upon contact hours of participation; 10 contact hours equals 1 CEU. Regulation D-5 in the General Catalog describes Continuing Education Units in detail.
CEU courses can be offered by UI academic departments as well as professional agencies that provide training seminars. CEU's are often used by professionals for licensure and certification within their specific expertise.
- The academic department or agency offering the course/seminar completes the Request for CEU Recognition form. UI academic departments must obtain the signature of their College Dean/Designee prior to submission to the Registrar's Office.
- Upon submission of the completed and approved request form, the Registrar's Office will open the course for registration in the appropriate semester and assign a CRN (Course Reference Number) to be used on registration forms. CRN's are specific to a semester and can only be used for registration during that semester. Courses/seminars that are offered during more than one semester or on a continual basis must be assigned a CRN specific to each registration period (semester). If the course is being offered over multiple semester, a copy of the Request for CEU Recognition form must be submitted for each semester. Along with a CRN, each CEU course/seminar will be assigned a course number of 001 and section number (i.e. 01, 02, 03, etc...) under the appropriate academic subject; this information along with the course/seminar title will appear on the registrant's transcript.
- Each course/seminar participant wishing to receive CEU's, must complete a CEU Registration Request form. Reference the CRN assigned to the course/seminar on each registrant's form (one form may be completing with the appropriate registration information and then copied and supplied to participants). Registration forms must be submitted to the UI Registrar's Office at the start of the course/seminar for those lasting more than one day and immediately following completion for those lasting one day or less to be considered for credit. Registrations will not be accepted for CEU's from a past semester. Registrants of CEU seminars offered by outside agencies must also submit, along with the CEU Registration Request form, a copy of the certificate of completion provided by the agency. All registrants must also include the $25 (per course) registration fee with their CEU Registration Request form.
- For CEU courses offered by UI academic departments—course instructors must assign grades online through VandalWeb. Grades of S (satisfactory) are given to all students completing course requirements; grades are due 72 hours after ending date of course. If you have any registrant that does not complete the course requirements satisfactorily, please contact Chris Menter.
Registrants may request copies of their official transcripts (record of CEU's) as proof of completion.
