Core Requirements

All degree seeking students attending the University of Idaho (UI) must complete the General Education Core requirements. Students may be on either the UI Core or the State Board of Education Core based on their admittance to the University of Idaho:

  • Students who begin their education at the University of Idaho with no prior college credit must complete the UI Core for the school year in which they were admitted. (e.g., a student admitted for Fall 2007 must complete the UI Core for the 2007-2008 catalog year.)
  • Transfer Students may choose to complete either the UI Core or the State Board of Education Core.

University of Idaho Core REQUIREMENTS (2008+ Catalogs)

  • Communication — English 102 plus 1 additional course for a minimum of 5 credits
  • Natural and applied sciences — 7-8 credits
  • Mathematics, statistics, or computer science — 3 credits
  • General Core Studies — 18 credits

University of Idaho Core REQUIREMENTS (2004-2007 Catalogs)

The UI Core website gives detailed information on the UI Core requirements along with courses that satisfy each area of requirements.  The General Core Studies Guide [xls] also gives a list of approved courses that satisfy each area of the general core studies requirements.

State Board of Education Core REQUIREMENTS

  • Communications — 2 credits
  • English Composition — 3 credits (equivalent to UI's English 102)
  • Behavioral and Social Sciences — 6 credits in two disciplines
  • Humanities, Fine Arts and Foreign Language — 6 credits
  • Natural Science — 7 credits (with at least one accompanying lab)
  • Mathematics — 3 credits
  • Total — A minimum of 36 credits in core courses required
